7 Ways Service-Based Solopreneurs Can Earn Extra Income (Without Trading Time for Money)

If you’re a coach, designer, VA, copywriter, therapist, or any other kind of service-based solopreneur, you’ve probably hit this wall at some point:

“I’m fully booked, I’m exhausted… and I still want to earn more.”

Sound familiar?

The problem probably isn’t your effort, it could be your model. When your business depends on you showing up in real time to deliver 1:1 services, there’s only so far you can go before burnout kicks in.

There is good new though! There are ways to grow your income without working more hours. Below are 7 smart, realistic ways to build extra income streams. Most of which you can start small, then scale as you go.

Turn your process into a template or toolkit

What do you do for clients over and over again? Turn that into a downloadable resource.

  • A welcome pack template (instead of sending several emails manually)
  • A self-reflection worksheet for clients between sessions
  • Confidence or mindset journaling prompts
  • A client preparation checklist (e.g. “Getting your home ready for renovations”)
  • A pre-treatment checklist for clients (what to wear, what to expect, how to prepare)

You already do this work for free! Now package it. Even if you can’t sell it, it will at least save you time from providing the information over and over again manually.

Create a micro-course or email challenge

You don’t need a massive, shiny online course to start with. Start with one problem you can solve well.

  • A 5-day “Shift Your Mood” challenge
  • Mini-course: “Inbox Management 101 for Overwhelmed Clients”
  • 5-day style challenge: “Refresh Your Wardrobe Without Buying a Thing”
  • 5-day challenge: “Ease Everyday Aches with At-Home Stretching”

Create once. Sell forever. One simple way to start monetising your knowledge is by running a live, online challenge or mini-course, something bite-sized, helpful and action-focused. You could charge £4.99-£19.99 to join, then offer a 1:1 session or group workshop as an upsell at the end.

For tutorials or workflow-based content (especially useful for VAs or service providers), you might price it between £9.99–£49, and include a higher-ticket “done-with-you” option for those who want more support.

Even an email course or self-guided resource can become a low-cost digital product, sold as a PDF or video series for £7.99–£29. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to solve a problem your audience cares about.

Offer a paid membership or community

Not everyone needs 1:1 time. Sometimes they just need a bit of guidance, support, or accountability.

  • A monthly Q&A group call
  • A WhatsApp group with weekly tips
  • A low-ticket membership packed with bite-sized info

Think low-cost, high-value.

Get Paid to Recommend What You Already Use (Affiliate Income)

You’re already sending your clients links, tools, products. Set up affiliate accounts and earn a small % each time someone clicks and buys.

  • Share links to your booking tool, payment system, or planner
  • Recommend books, skincare, tools, apps; whatever fits your niche
  • Add links to your welcome email, Instagram bio, or a “my toolkit” page

Tools: Amazon Associates, Bookshop.org, Canva, Ko-fi Shop, Etsy Affiliate

Host a Low-Cost Pop-Up Session

Don’t commit to a big launch. Just offer one session, one time, one topic. Pay-what-you-can or £5–£15 per person.

  • “Sort Your Inbox” hour
  • “Reframe It With Me” Fast mindset shift for when someone’s spiralling
  • A 15 min “What to wear” zoom call
  • “Quote Review” Service. Help someone check if a quote they got is fair/complete
  • “Book a 15-min brain pick” for coaches

You only need Calendly + Zoom or Google Meet

Create a Referral Loop (Without Feeling Salesy)

Ask your current or past clients to spread the word and reward them.

  • £10 off their next session if they refer a friend
  • Free add-on for every 3 people they send your way
  • Or set up an actual referral link using platforms like Growsurf

Your biggest fans want to help. It’ a nice little thank you for them.

Sell a Done-for-Them Bundle

Create a tiny done-for-you product someone can plug into their life or business:

  • 5 Canva templates for testimonials
  • A weekly menu plan with a shopping list
  • 10 plug-and-play journaling prompts

You’re just repackaging what you already know helps people. And they’ll pay for the relief it brings.

These kinds of offers are easy to promote on Instagram Stories, in a pinned post, or even via WhatsApp. They don’t require energy you don’t have and they do give people a way to work with you, even if they’re not ready for a big commitment.
